How To Become a Massage Therapist

Have you ever considered becoming a massage therapist? You may have found that massage has been very helpful to you personally, or you may just be called to massage as a way to help people feel better. Here is an overview of how to become a massage therapist.

Get the Proper Training

To learn how to be a massage therapist, you will need to take a massage certification course Atlanta. Make sure that the course you choose is accredited by your state. Your education may include courses in science, medicine, anatomy and ethics.

Gain Experience

While you are doing your coursework, you should also be practicing massage therapy. Your state will require you to have a certain number of hours of practical experience in order to be licensed.  You can work on this while you are in school by volunteering at your school’s massage clinic or obtaining an internship. You may also be able to volunteer at community events.

Receive Your License

In order to get a license in massage therapy, you will need to pass a licensing exam. Your state may have developed its own exam, or the state may have you take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx), which is a standard exam in massage therapy. After passing the exam, you can apply for a license in your state. Your state may have additional requirements for licensing, such as passing a background check.

Get Additional Certifications

In addition to the state license, you can obtain other certifications in a specialty of your choice. This is not absolutely necessary, but it can help you to market yourself to specialized clients. You can obtain certifications in sports massage, rehab massage, veterinary massage or spa management. Usually, you will have to take an exam for each certification.

If you are drawn to a career in massage therapy, you will be able to realize your dreams within a relatively short time by getting the necessary coursework and practical experience that you need to qualify for a state license.
